We supported a national infrastructure provider working across the UK’s highways. They were facing a serious issue: roadside equipment kept failing due to power outages. Without power, essential telemetry and smart motorway assets stopped working, which impacted road users directly.
Traditionally, highway infrastructure involved lighting, which was easier to manage. But as smart technology became more common, those systems became harder to predict—and far more critical. In response, National Highways decided to meter all smart motorway assets to improve reliability and speed up repairs.
We led the smart motorway metering programme by coordinating teams, managing interdependencies, and planning around a critical delivery path. The original estimate was 750 meter installations. However, we used data analysis to uncover the real number—over 1,500.
Our team identified which sites mattered most. We cleaned and validated asset data to make sure the client had accurate, future-ready information. As a result, outages that once took 25 days to resolve can now be addressed in 8 hours.
We also grouped key assets by location, which allowed the team to engage directly with distribution network operators and quickly identify outage sources. This clarity made a major difference across the network.
Thanks to this work, the client achieved over 80% improvement in metered coverage. Now, they have reliable, real-time visibility and a clear plan for future rollout. It’s no longer a question of how—it’s simply how many.
Our background in energy and smart metering gave us the tools to deliver at scale. We’re a small team, but we bring big impact—backed by deep technical experience and proven results.
