Client Overview
A UK-based infrastructure company experiencing rapid growth through organic expansion, major new deals, and multiple acquisitions. Backed by Venture Capital funding, the client had a challenger mindset but lacked a unified approach to project delivery.
Problem Statement
The client faced increasing complexity due to multiple, independently run IT programmes. Key challenges included:
- Lack of standardised governance contributed to frequent project delays and cost overruns, creating obstacles to efficient programme delivery during a period of rapid growth.
- Poor visibility of project interdependencies, creating risks in strategic execution.
- Misalignment between Agile development teams and traditional Waterfall projects.
- Limited senior stakeholder engagement and unclear project accountabilities.
Approach
We conducted a comprehensive assessment of the client’s project delivery landscape, identifying governance gaps, delivery inefficiencies, and opportunities for quick wins.
To address these challenges we established a Transformation Management Office to bring structure, control, and transparency to delivery. This focused on four key areas:
1. Governance & Reporting
- Standardised project status reporting to ensure consistent tracking of progress, risks, and issues.
- Established Governance Boards and SteerCos to drive structured,
accountable decision-making. - Implemented a transparent escalation process to resolve delivery
bottlenecks efficiently.
2. Risk & Dependency Management
- Introduced a structured RAID (Risks, Assumptions, Issues, Dependencies) framework to strengthen proactive risk management.
- Developed a high-level enterprise delivery plan to map dependencies across projects and programmes, improving early visibility of potential conflicts.
3. Delivery Methodology Optimisation
- Refined delivery practices to integrate Agile squads with traditional Waterfall structures, improving alignment between technical and business teams.
- Enhanced accountability by defining clear ownership of deliverables across delivery streams.
4. Programme Review & Cost Savings
- Conducted a strategic review of in-flight projects, enabling the prioritisation of initiatives that delivered the most value to the business.
- Identified misaligned or redundant projects, helping the client reduce unnecessary expenditure and improve delivery focus.
5. Challenges
- Siloed leadership and misaligned project priorities led to inefficiencies and delays.
- Lack of transparency in project performance made it difficult to track progress or escalate issues.
- Absence of structured risk and dependency management increased delivery risks.
Conclusion
We applied our experience in project governance and operational transformation to help the client gain full visibility and control over IT project delivery during a period of rapid growth.
By embedding a structured Transformation Management Office, we achieved:
- Improved project accountability and governance, which reduced delays and enabled clearer ownership across teams.
- Stronger senior leadership engagement through structured forums, allowing for faster, data-driven decision-making.
- Strategic project prioritisation that redirected resources from misaligned initiatives to those with the highest impact, significantly reducing wasted spend.
By aligning project delivery to business goals, the client not only improved execution efficiency but also built a scalable governance framework to support future growth.
